The Art of Eglomise – History and technique

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

hand painting eglomiseEglomisé is a very old technique dating back to the Pre-Roman era. It’s name is derived from a 18th Century French decorator, Jean Baptise Glomy (1711 – 1786) who was responsible for it’s re-popularization. The materials and technique we use are exactly the same as Jean Baptise Glomy had developed.

Gold leaf and hand painting under glass provides a reflectivity and beauty unseen in other art forms.

The process is very, very delicate, but we protect the back to avoid any scratching or damage from behind. The end result of the eglomisé process is to make the piece look old, it is not a mass produced automated process, so it will vary in clarity and character. The front of the Eglomisé is simply glass. Clean it with glass cleaner as you would a mirror or glass table top.

The layering of materials is what makes the use of gold so enticing. Light fixtures with gold accents, sideboards with inlaid details, chair frames gilt in gold leaf. Aged or patinated, the reflection of a gold timeliness finish softens the lines of any piece of furniture.  Read more about hand painted furntiure and eglomise.

Inlay and Veneer

Monday, March 19th, 2012

Inlay is a technique that dates back centuries and is still used today to enhance the beauty of furniture. It lends flair of dramatic sophistication yet it is unpretentious. The use of sumptuous materials and marvelous craftsmanship creates a look that is easy to live with and interesting to look at.  There are some truly fine examples of inlay furniture at Colorado Style Home Furnishings where there is a treasure trove of warm and inviting pieces.

 Inlay and Cutting Veneer

Using time-tested forms and materials as their foundation, a solid body of one material is cut out to receive sections of another to form a surface pattern. Small pieces of wood, stone, shell or metals are inserted into cut outs in the body of the piece of furniture. Geometric or floral patterns are used to create designs that add beautiful depth.  Master craftsmen and artisans continue the tradition of making furniture in a way that will show off your personal style with timeless design. This takes extraordinary skill and the result is a relaxed elegance and a look of graceful age. There are truly fine examples of inlay in the showrooms of Colorado Style Home Furnishings.

About Crotch Veneer

Friday, October 7th, 2011

About Crotch VeneerCrotch mahogany veneers originate from the area between two large branches of a tree (also known as a crotch) where different forces of nature are at work throughout a tree’s life. These forces push and pull the fibres of the wood, creating an exquisite surface grain. Even after the wood has been sliced and veneered, these forces are still at work. Over time, the grain may have a natural tendency to raise slightly and hairline cracks will appear. Again, these fine lines  are indicative of an heirloom piece.

History of the drawer

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

Colorado Style Home Furnishings blends timeless style that has classic personality with a fresh interpretation that is comfortable and modern. Each piece is carefully constructed by craftsmen and artisans in the time honored tradition that is centuries old.

In the 17th century there were many changes in the design of furniture. A lighter less bulky look and the use of a drawer was developed. The opening on the top of a chest became inconvenient since what you wanted was always on the bottom out of reach. The solution was the shallow drawer.

Eventually the dovetail became the joint that is still preferred today for drawers in fine furniture. The shape of a dovetail is cut into a piece of wood and is made to fit perfectly into a groove that is shaped in the the other piece of wood. This joint has been proven to last for centuries. We can look back and thank the artisans and craftsmen of hundreds of years ago for their designs and the long lasting furniture that they created. Only the finest furniture today is crafted in this way and these valuable pieces will become the heirlooms for the next generations.

Colorado Style Home Furnishings is Denver’s exceptional and innovative store to shop for  an outstanding array of what every home must have. We are the finest design resourse for all of Colorado. Remember that your home is never done..there is always more.  Surround yourself with the things you love.

Inspiration – Entry Table

Inspiration

This delicately inlaid centre table was inspired by an original piece from the Empire period (1804-1815)inlaid foyer table - entry table

This delicately inlaid entry table was inspired by an original piece from the Empire period (1804-1815). As Napoleon I came to power he sought to present himself in the manner of the ancient Roman emperors and so adopted their symbolism in his state art and architecture.

The intricate veneer inlay on the table top has an almost three-dimensional appearance and references the intricate mosaics of the Roman period.  It reminds us of architectural and stylistic achievements like the vaulted and coffered ceiling of the Pantheon. The Corinthian column legs also refer back to Roman Architectural principles of beauty and proportion.
