Let There be Light!

Let There be Light!

You have picked the perfect piece of furniture, artwork, rugs, mirrors and other décor in your home but your room is not quite finished;  Don’t forget the lighting! The decision between led lighting, floor lamps or table lamps may be the single most important element to complete your room. When properly applied, lighting can establish the mood, highlight special pieces in your home  and make living room designs (or any room!) not only functional but also drop-dead gorgeous. Keep these things in mind when picking the perfect lighting for your room:

 • Ambient, also known as general, lighting is used to brighten a room after the natural daylight has receded.  Ambient lighting comes from all directions in a room and has no visible source.  It is in contrast to directional lighting.  There are many decorative options in this arena, ranging from chandeliers to Led lighting and table lamps, recessed lights, hanging pendants or a floor up light, often referred to as a torchere lamp. Hurricane lamps can also help with final touches that are personal and unique.

 • What will the room be used for? Homework, hobbies, cooking and reading will require specific, bright lighting to illuminate the task at hand. Floor lamps and table lamps are an easy, convenient way to light a specific area with style. A desk lamp or reading lamps offer elegant form and practical function, another great example to create down lighting with style.  Colorado Style offers many beautifully shaded lamps with form and function.

• Accent lighting is just what it sounds like; use it to bring focus to an arrangement of silk flowers, a piece of art, picture frames or an architectural detail in your room. Up-lights (small, bright lights placed on the floor) and track lighting are good examples of accent lighting. A penshell lamp is also a unique way to create a cozy ambient glow that invites you into a room.

• Lighting fixtures can also be part of the décor in a room; part function, part art, they shed light as well as bring beauty. Most often thought of for dining room lighting, chandeliers are dramatic and create a focal point for any room. Chandelier lighting can be a fantastic way to dress up a high ceiling entrance foyer or a master suite.  When shopping for a chandelier, chandelier lamp shades are as important as the chandelier itself to reflect elegance and light. Dining Room Furniture – Interior Design

Sunday, September 25th, 2011

By the Design Diva

I’m having a great time working with Colorado Style Home Furnishings to turn the house at 5 Waterside Terrace in Cherry Hills Village into a home. It’s time to furnish my favorite, the dining room. I love visiting the Colorado Style showrooms; they are located side-by-side just off University Blvd. and C-470, near Highlands Ranch. An ever-changing inventory of hundreds of pieces, ranging from sofas, chairs and dining room tables to lamps, oil paintings, rugs, and silk flower arrangements make for a pleasant and satisfying walk through the stores.

Tuscan Dining Table

Marquetry Dining Table

With the entertaining season just around the corner, and knowing that the dining room is the focal point for so many gatherings, I chose an eight-foot rectangular table with a Tuscan, Old World vibe. It has an aged feel, and an ornate, beautiful pedestal base. No need for a tablecloth here, this table was meant to be seen and used! Happily, I didn’t need to wait weeks for delivery—I was able to have the piece brought to the home right away. It was tough to choose between the embossed leather chairs or the upholstered style; each featured nailhead trim and classic lines.

Burgundy Side ChairOver the table, I placed a magnificent verdi-aged bronze chandelier with seashell light bowls; to my mind, it’s a piece of sculpture that also happens to illuminate the room. Nearby, a curved-door buffet with ironwork accents stands ready to handle the parties. The walls are now adorned with hand-painted oils that I chose from the showrooms; the forests and water scenes create a comfortable mood for this space.

Illuminate Your Style: Choosing the Perfect Chandelier

Monday, September 20th, 2010

When it comes to dramatic lighting, chandeliers outshine the rest. Well-suited to a variety of spaces—high-ceilinged foyers, formal dining rooms, or even spacious master suites—they create an instant focal point while serving a practical purpose.

When shopping for chandeliers in Colorado—or anywhere, for that matter—it can be difficult to know where to begin. While it may be tempting to purchase a chandelier based on looks alone, there are a number of other important factors to consider:

  • Length: If you’ll be hanging the light fixture above a table, allow for approximately 30” of vertical space (from the surface of the table to the bottom of the chandelier) to provide ample lighting and to prevent painful head bumps. Figure in an additional 4” for hanging hardware, and if you like tall centerpieces or decorative accents, don’t forget to account for those. If you find a chandelier you love but it’s too short, you can always use a decorative chain to lower it. If you’ll be hanging the fixture in a living area or hallway, make sure it hangs at least 6’6” from the floor.
  • Width: If you’re illuminating a dining room, measure the width of the table and try to find a chandelier that’s about a foot narrower. Also take into account the overall dimensions of the room—add the length and width of the space and look for a chandelier that matches this number in inches. For example, if your room is 14’ x 20’, you’ll want to look for a fixture that’s around 34” wide. There are some exceptions to this rule: rooms with vaulted ceilings or lots of open space can accommodate bigger chandeliers, and smaller spaces or rooms with many furnishings may call for smaller fixtures.
  • Wattage: To ensure adequate illumination, make sure the chandelier accommodates bulbs between 200 and 400 watts. You’ll also need to consider the number of lights: if you’re illuminating a small space like a bathroom or short hallway, 6 to 8 bulbs should suffice, but larger areas may need additional light sockets. Chandeliers with dimmers give you more control over the light output and help to conserve energy.
  • Materials: Above all, the perfect chandelier should blend well with your existing décor elements, reflect your personal style, and offer a high level of craftsmanship and durability. At Colorado Style ® Home Furnishings, a premier Denver furniture store, each of our fine chandeliers is made from only the finest materials, including wood, bronze, brass, leather, iron, stone, nickel, rattan, copper, ceramic, and porcelain.
