The Art of Eglomise – History and technique

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

hand painting eglomiseEglomisé is a very old technique dating back to the Pre-Roman era. It’s name is derived from a 18th Century French decorator, Jean Baptise Glomy (1711 – 1786) who was responsible for it’s re-popularization. The materials and technique we use are exactly the same as Jean Baptise Glomy had developed.

Gold leaf and hand painting under glass provides a reflectivity and beauty unseen in other art forms.

The process is very, very delicate, but we protect the back to avoid any scratching or damage from behind. The end result of the eglomisé process is to make the piece look old, it is not a mass produced automated process, so it will vary in clarity and character. The front of the Eglomisé is simply glass. Clean it with glass cleaner as you would a mirror or glass table top.

The layering of materials is what makes the use of gold so enticing. Light fixtures with gold accents, sideboards with inlaid details, chair frames gilt in gold leaf. Aged or patinated, the reflection of a gold timeliness finish softens the lines of any piece of furniture.  Read more about hand painted furntiure and eglomise.

brassBrass artworks are hand cast in our own foundry, using age-old techniques. Occasional application of an inert wax that does not contain a cleansing agent will preserve the patina of the metal. Avoid using abrasive cloths or polishes that may damage the surface.
