Inlay and Veneer

Monday, March 19th, 2012

Inlay is a technique that dates back centuries and is still used today to enhance the beauty of furniture. It lends flair of dramatic sophistication yet it is unpretentious. The use of sumptuous materials and marvelous craftsmanship creates a look that is easy to live with and interesting to look at.  There are some truly fine examples of inlay furniture at Colorado Style Home Furnishings where there is a treasure trove of warm and inviting pieces.

 Inlay and Cutting Veneer

Using time-tested forms and materials as their foundation, a solid body of one material is cut out to receive sections of another to form a surface pattern. Small pieces of wood, stone, shell or metals are inserted into cut outs in the body of the piece of furniture. Geometric or floral patterns are used to create designs that add beautiful depth.  Master craftsmen and artisans continue the tradition of making furniture in a way that will show off your personal style with timeless design. This takes extraordinary skill and the result is a relaxed elegance and a look of graceful age. There are truly fine examples of inlay in the showrooms of Colorado Style Home Furnishings.

Inspiration – Entry Table

Inspiration

This delicately inlaid centre table was inspired by an original piece from the Empire period (1804-1815)inlaid foyer table - entry table

This delicately inlaid entry table was inspired by an original piece from the Empire period (1804-1815). As Napoleon I came to power he sought to present himself in the manner of the ancient Roman emperors and so adopted their symbolism in his state art and architecture.

The intricate veneer inlay on the table top has an almost three-dimensional appearance and references the intricate mosaics of the Roman period.  It reminds us of architectural and stylistic achievements like the vaulted and coffered ceiling of the Pantheon. The Corinthian column legs also refer back to Roman Architectural principles of beauty and proportion.
